  1. If             you're         like           most           kids,  
  2. you've         probably       broken         a              bone   
  3. before.        Or             you            know           someone
  4. else           who            has.           Have           you    
  5. seen           a              cast           before?        Do     
  6. you            know           how            casts          work?  
  7. What           they're        made           of?            Whether
  8. it's           OK             to             draw           on     
  9. them?          Read           this           article        to     
  10. find           out            all            about          casts. 
  11. Think          of             a              cast           as     
  12. a              big            bandage        that           has    
  13. two            layers.        There          is             a      
  14. soft           cotton         layer.         It             rests  
  15. next           to             the            skin.          The    
  16. hard           outer          layer          prevents       the    
  17. broken         bone           from           moving.        Sometimes
  18. you            can            choose         how            your   
  19. cast           looks.         You            can            pick   
  20. cool           colors         or             patterns.      Plaster
  21. casts          are            usually        white.         They   
  22. are            made           from           plaster        of     
  23. Paris.         You            may            have           used   
  24. this           for            school         art            projects.
  25. Plaster        of             Paris          is             a      
  26. heavy          white          powder.        When           it's   
  27. mixed          with           water,         it             forms  
  28. a              thick          paste          that           gets   
  29. hard           fast.          Fiberglass     casts          are    
  30. made           of             fiberglass.    It             is     
  31. a              plastic        material.      It             can    
  32. be             shaped.        Fiberglass     casts          come   
  33. in             lots           of             colors.        If     
  34. you're         lucky,         the            doctor         may    
  35. let            you            pick           the            color. 
  36. These          casts          are            lighter        and    
  37. stronger       than           plaster        casts.         You    
  38. don't          want           to             get            your   
  39. cast           wet.           Water          will           cause  
  40. the            cast           to             become         loose  
  41. or             come           off.           If             you    
  42. take           a              bath,          you            have   
  43. to             cover          the            cast           with   
  44. a              plastic        bag.           Luckily,       some   
  45. casts          are            also           waterproof.    This   
  46. means          you            can            get            them   
  47. wet            without        ruining        the            cast.  
  48. So             you            can            take           a      
  49. shower         or             a              bath           without
  50. having         to             protect        the            cast   
  51. with           a              plastic        bag            or     
  52. sleeve.        The            soft           padding        beneath
  53. is             made           of             waterproof     material.
  54. The            top            layer          is             made   
  55. of             fiberglass.    With           this           type   
  56. of             cast,          you            might          even   
  57. be             able           to             swim!          The    
  58. cast           may            be             on             your   
  59. arm.           If             so,            you            may    
  60. be             given          a              sling          to     
  61. help           you            support        and            carry  
  62. it.            A              sling          is             a      
  63. wide           piece          of             cloth          with   
  64. straps.        The            straps         go             around 
  65. your           neck.          They           are            attached
  66. to             the            cloth          that           goes   
  67. around         your           arm.           You            may    
  68. have           broken         your           leg.           If     
  69. so,            you            might          get            crutches
  70. to             help           you            walk.          You    
  71. may            have           broken         a              bone   
  72. falling        down           or             tripping.      When   
  73. you            break          a              bone,          the    
  74. broken         pieces         can            have           sharp  
  75. edges.         When           you            move           the    
  76. broken         area,          the            sharp          edges  
  77. can            move           and            cause          pain.  
  78. Your           doctor         will           make           sure   
  79. that           all            the            pieces         of     
  80. your           broken         bone           are            set
